AGA introduces Nigel, AI assistant for Gastroenterology and Hepatology -

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has announced the launch of Nigel, an AI-powered virtual assistant designed specifically for gastroenterology and hepatology. Developed in collaboration with experts Dennis L. Shung, MD, MHS, PhD, Bradly C. Stadie, PhD, and Aly T. Strauss, MD, MIE, Nigel provides clinicians with rapid, evidence-based answers tailored to the complexities of digestive disease care.

Nigel is built on AGA’s peer-reviewed clinical guidelines and structured around the GRADE evidence framework. Unlike general AI tools trained on broad internet data, Nigel delivers transparent, guideline-informed responses that highlight both the strength of available evidence and areas of uncertainty. The platform is continuously updated as AGA publishes new guidance and as emerging research reshapes clinical recommendations.

Nigel functions as a digital colleague by:

• Delivering evidence-based answers informed by AGA guidelines and practice updates.

• Interpreting GRADE recommendations to support clinical decision-making.

• Providing supporting research for diagnostic and treatment validation.

• Reducing cognitive burden by minimizing time spent on literature searches.

• Helping mitigate burnout through faster access to current evidence.

Nigel’s real-time updates ensure clinicians always have access to the latest guidance. By streamlining access to trusted information, the platform aims to enhance patient safety, improve efficiency, and support clinicians in managing the demands of modern gastroenterology and hepatology practice.
