Print and publishing services provider Allen Press, US, has chosen to integrate Quark, Inc.'s Quark XML Author into its publishing workflow in order to further automate its publishing processes and create competitive advantages for its publishers. Quark XML Author is an XML authoring and editing add-in to Microsoft Word that allows anyone using Microsoft Word to create or edit XML content.
Allen Press serves 300 publishers and produces more than 400 publications. To manage its large volume of content with varying workflows and output requirements, the company uses XML as a means to create content in a single standardised source. The source can be reviewed easily and published automatically to multiple types of media.
The XML schema used by Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word complies with the Journal Archiving Tag Set dictated by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The Journal Archiving Tag Set specifies the tagging and structure of content and metadata for journal articles, including research and non-research articles, letters, editorials, and book and product reviews. XML tagging is stated to regularise the NLM's archiving process, improve information retrieval, and optimise print and web production of the material.
Allen Press is said to have easily integrated Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word into its publishing workflow, which includes other XML infrastructure, to enable its staff to author and edit XML structured content without having to learn complex XML syntax. With Quark XML Author, Allen Press is purportedly now able to help clients comply with the XML tagging requirements of the industry; streamline external review and internal publishing processes; liberate technical typesetters to focus on complex jobs; relieve editors, writers, and proof readers from worrying about formatting so they can focus on content; edit a single source of content in XML and publish automatically to the web; and improve customer satisfaction by providing quicker time to publish.
