SPARC Europe is proud to be a key partner in the newly launched ALMASI project, which is set to transform nonprofit open access (OA) publishing globally. The project, which officially launched in Madrid on January 14, 2025, is a collaborative effort involving 15 partners across 10 countries in Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Funded by Horizon Europe, ALMASI aims to enhance global Diamond OA publishing services, with the initiative running until December 2027.
The primary goal of ALMASI is to deepen the understanding of nonprofit OA publishing across these three regions and co-design best practices for service provision. By improving the technical and scientific quality of publishing solutions, ALMASI will also work to stimulate the development of institutional and national policies that financially support non-profit OA publishing. This initiative is designed to build a globally aligned, high-quality, sustainable scholarly communications ecosystem.
SPARC Europe will co-lead the work on sustainability through policy and funding, while also contributing to mapping non-profit OA publishing services and solutions. The project aims to foster long-term sustainability for Diamond OA publishing and ensure the growth of high-quality, nonprofit academic publishing models.
ALMASI builds upon SPARC Europe’s extensive experience with the OA Diamond Journals Study and the DIAMAS Project. By focusing on non-profit publishing models, ALMASI will continue to drive positive change in scholarly communications on a global scale.
