The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has entered into a new partnership with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide IPCC authors with access to AMS’s portfolio of peer-reviewed scholarly publications in support of the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).
Under the collaboration, IPCC authors will be able to use AMS-published research spanning atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic, and climate sciences as part of the assessment process. The arrangement is intended to support authors worldwide, including those from developing countries and researchers facing institutional or financial access barriers, as they evaluate the most recent findings related to climate change.
AMS publishes a broad portfolio of high-impact journals covering atmospheric and related sciences and operates as a nonprofit scholarly society focused on disseminating authoritative research and supporting evidence-based decision-making. By providing equitable access to its scholarly publications, AMS aims to strengthen the scientific foundation of the IPCC’s assessment process and support a diverse, global community of contributing experts involved in AR7.
The IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report is expected to play a critical role in informing global policymaking on climate change by synthesizing the rapidly expanding body of scientific research in the field. Access to peer-reviewed literature is considered central to ensuring that assessment findings are comprehensive, rigorous, and globally representative.
In addition to the IPCC partnership, AMS has participated in other initiatives aimed at supporting large-scale climate assessments. These include collaboration with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) on the U.S. Climate Collection, a curated set of research papers made freely available to the public, the global research community, and decision-makers across public policy and industry to inform evaluations of climate risks and potential solutions in the United States.
