The American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT), the flagship research publication of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), will transition to the Sage Journals digital platform. The move is intended to enhance access to occupational therapy scholarship, improve visibility, and support the journal’s continued growth.
AJOT’s mission to publish peer‑reviewed research on the effectiveness and efficiency of occupational therapy practice remains unchanged. For more than eight decades, the journal has provided evidence that informs practice and supports practitioners, educators, students, and researchers.
AOTA confirmed that AJOT will continue as its official peer‑reviewed research journal, with editorial oversight maintained by AOTA and the journal’s leadership. Members will retain access through their existing AOTA login, and manuscript submissions will continue via the ScholarOne system.
By joining the Sage Journals platform, AJOT will be positioned alongside other leading occupational therapy periodicals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and additional regions. This shared environment is expected to facilitate discovery of related research, broaden global perspectives, and encourage collaboration across the profession.
The transition is also expected to improve article discoverability and provide opportunities for future enhancements, such as multimedia features that expand how research is presented.
AOTA members will continue to receive free access to the Australian Occupational Therapy Journal, the British Journal of Occupational Therapy, and the Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy, along with discounted subscriptions to OTJR: Occupational Therapy Journal of Research.
To introduce readers to the new platform, Sage will make AJOT content openly available until August 31, 2026. This temporary access period allows occupational therapy professionals, students, educators, and researchers to explore the journal’s content and experience its role in advancing evidence‑based practice.
