APL Energy and APL Machine Learning achieve first journal impact factors -

AIP Publishing has marked a significant milestone with two of its newest open access journals, APL Energy and APL Machine Learning, each receiving their inaugural Journal Impact Factor (JIF) in the 2025 edition of Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports.

APL Energy debuted with an Impact Factor of 4.4, while APL Machine Learning achieved 4.1. These results highlight the growing visibility and citation impact of the research published in both journals.

The Journal Impact Factor, released annually by Clarivate, is one of the most widely recognized metrics in scholarly publishing. It reflects the average number of citations received by a journal’s recent articles and is often used by researchers, institutions, and funders as an indicator of influence within a field, alongside other qualitative and quantitative measures.

Launched in 2023, APL Energy publishes interdisciplinary research addressing global energy challenges, spanning energy generation, conversion, storage, and utilization. Founding editor-in-chief Mónica Lira-Cantú noted that the journal’s first Impact Factor represents an important milestone, reflecting the dedication of authors and the quality of the research published.

Also launched in 2023, APL Machine Learning provides a platform for research at the intersection of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and the physical sciences. Founding editor-in-chief Adnan Mehonic observed that while no single metric captures the full picture, the journal’s first Impact Factor demonstrates that its publications are being widely read, applied, and built upon across disciplines.

Melissa Patterson, Head of Journal Portfolio Development at AIP Publishing, emphasized that receiving a first Impact Factor is a defining moment for any new journal. She added that the achievement underscores the strength of the communities supporting APL Energy and APL Machine Learning, as well as the contributions of authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial board members.

Both journals are part of the APL family of open access publications, which provide high-impact platforms for emerging and interdisciplinary areas of research.
