Apple opts for MathType as equation editor for new iWork '09 suite of applications -

Enterprise software vendor Design Science, Inc., US, has announced that Apple has chosen its product MathType as the equation editor for its new iWork '09 suite of applications. Design Science makes the MathFlow line of MathML editing and composition tools for XML publishing.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, made the announcement to adopt MathType in the keynote address at the recently concluded Macworld Expo conference in San Francisco. MathType works with all three iWork applications - Pages (word processor), Keynote (presentation) and Numbers (spreadsheet).

According to Design Service, MathType has long been known as the professional version of the Equation Editor in Microsoft Office, used by millions of educators, scientists and engineers to create papers and presentations with textbook-quality equations. It is estimated by scientific and technical publishers that over 85 percent of submitted manuscripts containing mathematical notation are Microsoft Word documents with MathType or Equation Editor equations. Now that MathType works with Apple's iWork, coverage of the word processing and presentation applications on Mac and Windows is projected to be virtually complete.

Founded in 1986, Design Science develops software used by educators, scientists and publishing professionals, including MathType, Equation Editor in Microsoft Office, WebEQ, MathFlow and MathPlayer, to communicate on the web and in print. As per company estimates, these products are used by millions of people worldwide, and most of the mathematics in content today is created using these products.
