ARL and CNI form joint task force to envision AI and machine-learning futures in research -

A joint task force, representing the membership of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), has begun working on a six-month initiative to develop a set of possible future scenarios examining how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning might transform the research enterprise.

The task force, comprising members from both ARL and CNI, will work collectively to envision diverse scenarios that explore how AI and machine learning may shape the future of research. By engaging in this forward-looking exercise, the task force seeks to provide valuable insights for member institutions and the wider community. The scenarios developed during this initiative are expected to play a pivotal role in fostering understanding, facilitating strategic planning, and navigating the implications of AI and machine learning technologies.

The ARL and CNI recognize the importance of community involvement in shaping these scenarios. Opportunities for contributions will be available through meetings coinciding with ARL and CNI events, allowing members to actively participate in the scenario development process. Additionally, virtual focus groups will be open to the wider community, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives are considered.

This initiative builds upon the success of previous scenario planning efforts, reflecting ARL and CNI's commitment to staying at the forefront of emerging trends in the research landscape. By exploring potential futures shaped by AI and machine learning, the joint task force aims to equip institutions with the knowledge and foresight needed to navigate the evolving research environment.
