The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has announced a new agreement with Wiley to manage a significant portion of its publishing operations. Under the arrangement, Wiley will oversee sales and marketing for ASME journals, conference proceedings, and the associated digital collection. ASME will continue to manage its book publishing program, which includes nearly 400 print titles and more than 200 digital books covering established and emerging areas of mechanical engineering. All publications will remain ASME products, with the Society retaining copyright, editorial governance, and peer review authority.
ASME emphasized that it will continue to collaborate closely with its volunteer leadership, including the Technical Committee on Publications and Communications (TCPC) and the Board of Editors, to ensure its publications remain guided by independent technical expertise. The Society noted that its journals are widely recognized for technical excellence and community-driven editorial standards. Wiley will assume ASME’s contractual relationships with libraries, universities, and other customers worldwide to maintain continuity of service.
ASME Executive Director and CEO Tom Costabile stated that the agreement reflects the Society’s responsibility to steward its publishing program for the long term while meeting the evolving needs of the global engineering community. He explained that by aligning with Wiley for journals and conference proceedings operations, ASME can focus on editorial leadership, volunteer engagement, and advancing engineering knowledge worldwide.
Wiley highlighted that it brings global publishing expertise, sales and marketing capabilities, and industry-leading technologies to enhance the scale, discoverability, and impact of ASME’s publishing portfolio. Jay Flynn, Wiley’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Research & Learning, remarked that ASME has long served as a vital connector for the global engineering community. He noted that research published in ASME journals and proceedings often informs standards, design decisions, and practical applications. Flynn added that Wiley, as the world’s largest society publisher, is well positioned to extend ASME’s reach and ensure engineering science is accessible to those building the future.
ASME currently publishes more than 35 academic journals, hundreds of books, and numerous conference proceedings. Each year, over 2,000 papers are published in ASME journals, providing essential resources for engineers seeking to stay current with the latest research, theory, practice, and applications.
