Canadian Medical Association responds to federal AI strategy in healthcare -

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has expressed support for the federal government’s new national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, noting its potential to expand AI use in healthcare while introducing protections for Canadians.

The CMA highlighted that AI is already demonstrating value in reducing administrative burdens for physicians, improving system efficiency, and supporting clinical decision-making. At the same time, the association emphasized that healthcare risks associated with AI require strong safeguards.

The organization welcomed measures aimed at protecting Canadians, particularly children, from AI-related risks and online harms, while ensuring access to accurate and trusted health information. It also pointed to the importance of investments in health data infrastructure, which could enable AI to improve care delivery and patient outcomes.

The CMA noted that prioritizing AI literacy through professional education would help build skills and readiness among health professionals, ensuring they are equipped to work in AI-enabled health systems.

The association stated its readiness to collaborate with the federal government in advancing a future where AI strengthens healthcare delivery and improves outcomes across Canada.
