CCC introduces collective licensing solution for AI content usage -

CCC, a leading authority in copyright advancement and innovation acceleration, has announced a pioneering addition to its Annual Copyright Licenses (ACL) – artificial intelligence (AI) re-use rights. This new feature positions the ACL as the first-ever collective licensing solution tailored for the internal use of copyrighted materials within AI systems.

The inclusion of AI re-use rights within the ACL offers businesses subscribing to CCC's licenses the ability to legally acquire and utilize a broad range of copyrighted materials within their AI systems. This innovative solution allows participating rightsholders to meet the growing demand for efficient and legal access to high-quality content, which is crucial for the development and operation of AI technologies.

AI systems are revolutionizing various industries by accelerating research and development and enhancing operational efficiency. These systems depend on diverse materials, including copyrighted content, to function effectively. By creating and storing copies of such content, AI systems ensure that valuable information is readily accessible for future reference.

The ACL’s new feature addresses the essential need for voluntary, non-exclusive collective licensing solutions that facilitate the use of copyrighted materials in AI systems. This approach not only allows users to benefit from AI technologies but also ensures that rightsholders are fairly compensated for the new applications of their content.

Since its inception in 1978, CCC has been at the forefront of providing harmonized licensing solutions for content users. Its portfolio includes various non-exclusive voluntary collective licensing solutions such as ACL for Business, Multinational Copyright License (MCL) for Business, ACL for Higher Education, ACL for Curriculum & Instruction, and ACL for Student Assessments. Beyond licensing, CCC offers a one-stop platform for users to request, receive, and pay for full-text content and permissions for content re-use.

CCC is also a proactive advocate for copyright issues on a global scale, engaging with governments, stakeholders, and individuals through educational programming and thought leadership resources. The organization maintains an online hub, AI, Copyright & Licensing, which serves as a comprehensive resource for creators, publishers, rightsholders, technologists, media representatives, policymakers, intellectual property attorneys, and other interested parties.
