Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) is set to host an illuminating virtual Town Hall discussion on "AI, Licensing, and the Path Forward." The event, featuring an international panel of experts, will take place on October 12, at 10:00 EDT, 15:00 BST, and 16:00 CEST, broadcast live on LinkedIn Live.
CCC's Vice President and General Counsel, Catherine Zaller Rowland, will lead a distinguished panel of legal experts, including Prof. Daniel Gervais, Bruce Rich, and Carlo Scollo Lavizarri. Together, they will delve into the evolution of licensing and its pivotal role as a catalyst for research and innovation through artificial intelligence (AI).
The discussion will encompass topics such as how voluntary collective licensing can facilitate the use of extensive collections of copyrighted materials. Furthermore, the panel will address critical concerns surrounding copyright, equity, transparency, and authenticity that AI technology providers must navigate.
According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute published in June, generative AI is poised to contribute up to $4.4 trillion in value to the global economy annually. The rapid adoption of AI technology across various industries necessitates access to vast amounts of data, including copyrighted content.
CCC is actively collaborating with stakeholders, including rightsholders and users, to develop market-based licensing solutions. Concurrently, the organization advocates for responsible policies that respect copyright, addressing the complex challenges posed by the intersection of AI and licensing.
In conjunction with the Town Hall event, CCC has launched a dedicated AI resource page, titled "Intersection of AI & Copyright." This resource includes Prof. Gervais' paper, "Collective Licensing and AI," as well as an essay by Bruce Rich in CCC's eBook "Creating Solutions Together: Lessons to Inform the Future of Collective Licensing."
CCC regularly convenes expert panels to explore intricate and significant subjects within the realms of research, publishing, and media. In September, CCC co-hosted a forum in partnership with the GO FAIR Foundation in the Netherlands, focusing on building AI strategies with FAIR Data. Previous CCC Town Hall events have covered topics such as Information Integrity & ChatGPT, delving into the evolving nature of originality and authenticity in an AI-dominated world, and Making Research Data FAIR, which centered on the development of research data that adheres to the principles of being Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).
