Clarivate releases 2025 Journal Citation Reports with enhanced emphasis on research integrity -

Clarivate has released the 2025 edition of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), marking the 50th anniversary of the annual publication. The updated reports continue to serve as a core resource for academic institutions, researchers, and publishers by providing independent, publisher-neutral data on the performance and impact of scholarly journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection.

The 2025 JCR includes data on 22,249 journals across 254 subject categories, with over 6,200 of these journals published under gold open access models. Scholarly titles from 111 countries are covered, with 14,591 journals in the sciences, 7,559 in the social sciences, and 3,368 in the arts and humanities. An additional 618 journals receive a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for the first time.

A key policy change in this year’s release concerns the treatment of retracted content. Citations to and from retracted articles are excluded from the JIF numerator, while retracted articles remain in the article count (the denominator), affecting approximately 1% of indexed journals. This change is designed to uphold the integrity of scholarly metrics while ensuring full transparency.

The JCR continues to offer a range of metrics and analyses, including the Journal Citation Indicator and the widely used JIF, to provide comprehensive insights into journal performance. These metrics are intended to support informed decision-making within the global research community.

Clarivate emphasizes that the 2025 edition reaffirms its longstanding commitment to research integrity, aligning with the foundational vision of Eugene Garfield, the original architect of citation indexing. As the scholarly publishing landscape evolves, the organization underscores its focus on transparency, accountability, and equity across the ecosystem.

The 50th edition of the JCR reinforces Clarivate’s role in enabling researchers, institutions, and policymakers to assess scholarly journals with greater precision and confidence, while advancing global research visibility and standards.
