Clarivate Plc, a global leader in providing transformative intelligence, has launched its first Pulse of the Library™ report, offering key insights into the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in libraries worldwide. The report highlights that while libraries are in the early stages of AI adoption, many are actively exploring its potential to enhance content discovery and improve operational efficiency. However, significant challenges such as limited AI expertise and budget constraints remain.
Drawing on data from over 1,500 librarians from academic, national, and public libraries across the globe, the report provides both quantitative and qualitative insights. Additionally, a dedicated microsite features interactive data visualizations, enabling comparative analysis based on regions and library types.
Key Findings from the Report:
• AI Plans in Progress: More than 60% of libraries surveyed have either implemented or are in the process of planning for AI integration.
• AI as a Top Technology Priority: For 43% of respondents, AI-powered tools for library users and patrons rank as the highest technology priority for the next 12 months.
• Advancing Library Missions: AI is seen as a powerful tool to support student learning (52%), promote research excellence (47%), and enhance content discoverability (45%), aligning with libraries' core goals.
• Potential and Challenges of AI: While 42% of respondents believe AI can automate routine tasks, allowing librarians to focus on strategic activities, concerns about a lack of expertise and shrinking budgets remain prominent.
• Budget Constraints: Nearly half (47%) of libraries view shrinking budgets as their greatest challenge in AI adoption.
• Skills Gap: 52% of respondents identify upskilling as AI’s biggest employment impact, but 32% note that no AI-related training is available.
• IT to Lead AI Integration: Libraries are expected to rely on the expertise of IT leaders and strategic guidance from senior management to advance AI implementation.
• Regional Differences: Views on sustainability, diversity, open access, and open science vary significantly across regions.
In early 2024, Clarivate also launched the Academia AI Advisory Council, comprising library and academic leaders from institutions worldwide. The council's insights aim to guide responsible AI adoption in academia, driving innovation across Clarivate AI solutions.
