CRC Press and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) have launched a new book series examining ethical issues associated with current and emerging artificial intelligence technologies. The AAAI/CRC Press Advances in AI Ethics series will examine questions related to the development, deployment, governance, and responsible use of AI.
The series will feature contributions from researchers and practitioners internationally and will address ethical considerations associated with AI applications and their broader social implications. It is intended for researchers, students, policymakers, and technology professionals.
The series is edited by Francesca Rossi, an IBM Fellow and AI Ethics Global Leader in the United States, and Virginia Dignum of Umeå University in Sweden, with support from AAAI.
Rossi explained that existing literature on AI ethics covers a wide range of perspectives and assumptions about the issues involved and how they should be addressed. She noted that the series takes an empirical and evidence-based approach that considers AI ethics in relation to governance and aligns with AAAI's focus on scientific approaches to AI. According to Rossi, presenting the work as a series allows this perspective to be applied consistently across multiple volumes.
The first book, Ethical AI and Education: Reality, Opportunities, Governance, and Consequences of AI in the Classroom, by Clara Hawking and Darren Coxon, is scheduled for publication later this month. The book examines the use of AI in educational environments and discusses issues including governance, accountability, bias, data privacy, academic integrity, and teacher agency. It also considers practical approaches to incorporating AI into classroom settings while maintaining a human-centered approach to education.
The second book in the series, The End of Reality: Humans in the Age of ChatGPT, Deepfakes, and Artificial Intelligence by Mateusz Łabuz, is scheduled for publication in December 2026.
