Crossref has introduced a new data citation API endpoint, released in beta, to expand support for data citation and research transparency. The service currently contains more than 700,000 data citations and is updated continuously using reference and relationship metadata deposited by Crossref members.
The initiative builds on longstanding efforts within scholarly publishing to strengthen reproducibility and open science by making underlying research data more accessible. Crossref has invited the community to test the beta service and provide feedback, including suggestions for additional features or metadata. Feedback will be reviewed on a rolling basis until September 2026, when a decision will be made on whether to move the endpoint into full production.
Documentation and access to the endpoint are available on Crossref’s website, with opportunities for users to share feedback through the Crossref community forum or by contacting the organization directly.
