DataSeer has partnered with Research Consulting to support BioFAIR’s new Monitoring and Evaluation project. BioFAIR, established as the UK’s national infrastructure for FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) life science data, is entering its second year. The initiative seeks to establish benchmarks for FAIR adoption, identify barriers, and track progress across the communities it serves.
DataSeer’s Open Science Metrics tool will play a central role in the project. Using AI and full‑text natural language processing, the tool scans thousands of published articles to compile detailed statistics on open science adoption. Unlike citation‑based tracking methods, this approach uncovers researcher behaviors that are often overlooked, such as data generation without sharing or datasets hidden in supplementary materials.
The tool’s FAIR compliance feature evaluates whether publicly available data meet FAIR standards by assessing repository characteristics and generating composite scores across article corpora.
Tim Vines, Founder and CEO of DataSeer, explained that granting visibility into researcher practices is a first step toward establishing norms that support reproducibility, validation, reuse, and stronger research outcomes. He noted that providing publishers, funders, and providers with more information can help build a scholarly communication system that better reflects scientific values and best practices.
