DOAJ transitions to new legal entity under the DOAJ Foundation -

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is transitioning into a new legal entity, the DOAJ Foundation, a nonprofit foundation based in Denmark. Over the coming months, its operations will gradually shift from Infrastructure Services for Open Access, its current host organization, to the newly established foundation. This move is intended to enhance DOAJ’s long-term sustainability by strengthening community governance and streamlining its structure, allowing the organization to remain focused on its core mission.

The governance of the new foundation will be overseen by the DOAJ Foundation Board, comprising members representing the diverse stakeholders of the open access community. In addition, an Advisory Board will be formed to include librarians, publishers, researchers, data users, and research funders from across the globe. A call for nominations to these boards will be issued in the near future.

During the transition, DOAJ will continue to operate as usual, ensuring uninterrupted services and maintaining its commitment to providing high-quality content. Infrastructure Services for Open Access, a UK-based Community Interest Company, will remain operational until the migration process is fully completed.

This transition marks a significant step in DOAJ’s evolution, reinforcing its ability to support the open access community and ensuring its continued impact in the years ahead.
