DuraSpace, a US-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the world’s scholarly, scientific and cultural records, and Internet2 have announced that Internet2 members now have automatic access to DuraCloud. DuraCloud is a service for archiving and managing content in the cloud featuring one-click creation of many copies, in multiple locations with several providers. The announcement was made at the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting.
DuraCloud is the first Internet2 NET+ community-developed service aimed at meeting the preservation needs of Internet2 members. As the only managed software service that lets organisations archive content across more than one cloud provider, DuraCloud ensures that irreplaceable documents, imagery and videos are always accessible.
The Internet2 NET+ DuraSpace partnership offers current and future Internet2 members the first community service that makes the cloud more accessible and more cost effective for archiving digital library materials and research output from academic institutions, museums, and other knowledge stewards.
Internet2 NET+ Services provide “above the network” services to Internet2 member organizations, including higher education, government, and industry. The new services create a platform tailored to the needs of the Internet2 community, are cost and administratively effective, and leverage Internet2's 100G network and InCommon identity management services.
