EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has launched two new artificial intelligence (AI) features, AI Insights and Natural Language Search (NLS), designed to enhance research efficiency and search accuracy. These additions align with EBSCO’s ongoing efforts to improve the researcher experience by integrating AI-driven capabilities into its platforms.
AI Insights provides on-demand key takeaways from full-text articles, enabling researchers to quickly assess article relevance for their topics. The feature is built on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which grounds summaries in full-text content to minimize inaccuracies. To maintain reliability, AI Insights undergoes human-in-the-loop validation, with EBSCO librarians reviewing outputs for accuracy.
Natural Language Search (NLS) allows users to conduct searches using conversational language, improving context understanding and retrieval accuracy. The system leverages EBSCO’s relevance ranking framework, subject query expansion via the Unified Subject Index, and linked data-controlled vocabularies to refine search results. AI-powered query expansion further enhances the interpretation of common language terms to align with researcher intent.
AI Insights is now available across EBSCO’s full-text databases and EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) through multiple platform interfaces. NLS is set to launch as a configurable option for English-language searches in April 2025, with EBSCO actively working on expanding functionality to additional languages.
These innovations reflect EBSCO’s strategic approach to integrating AI into research workflows, ensuring that users benefit from advanced discovery tools while maintaining access to high-quality, authoritative content.
