EDP Sciences journals report strong metric gains across multiple disciplines in 2024 -

EDP Sciences has reported improved performance across its journal portfolio in the 2024 Journal Citation Reports and CiteScores, with notable increases in several key subject areas, including optics, engineering, health sciences, astronomy, mathematics, applied science, and environmental research.

Among the most significant increases was the Journal of the European Optical Society – Rapid Publications, which registered a 68% rise in its Impact Factor, reaching 3.2, and a 9.1% increase in its CiteScore to 3.6. The publication continues to establish itself as a leading outlet for research in optical science and photonics.

Manufacturing Review posted a 53% increase in its Impact Factor to 1.9, while its CiteScore grew by 3.6% to reach 5.7, reinforcing its relevance in industrial technologies and applied engineering. Similarly, Metallurgical Research & Technology surpassed an Impact Factor of 1.0 for the first time, rising by 22% to 1.1. Its CiteScore also increased by 5.9%, now standing at 1.0.

In health and medical sciences, Radioprotection reported a 29% rise in its Impact Factor to 1.8 and a 13% increase in its CiteScore to 2.6. The journal continues to serve as a reference point for radiological protection and safety. SICOT-J, which focuses on orthopaedics and trauma surgery, recorded a 28% growth in its Impact Factor, now 2.3, and a 9.7% increase in its CiteScore to 3.4.

Mathematics journals also showed steady gains. RAIRO – Operations Research posted a 17% increase in its Impact Factor to 2.1 and an 11.1% rise in its CiteScore to 4.0. ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis saw a 5% increase in Impact Factor to 2.2, along with a 10% rise in CiteScore to 3.3.

Titles in acoustics, sustainability, and environmental science also recorded positive trends. Acta Acustica increased its Impact Factor by 40% to 1.4, with a 17.9% growth in its CiteScore. Aquatic Living Resources posted a 27% rise in its Impact Factor, reinforcing its position in ecosystem-focused research on fisheries and aquaculture. Science and Technology for Energy Transition likewise saw a 27% increase in its Impact Factor, now at 1.9, highlighting continued relevance in energy systems research. OCL – Oilseeds and Fats, Crops and Lipids recorded an 11% rise in Impact Factor to 2.0, reflecting sustained importance in nutrition, food safety, and sustainability domains.

Other journals, such as Parasite, which marked its centenary in 2023, posted a 4% increase in Impact Factor to 2.4, maintaining its visibility in parasitology.

Astronomy & Astrophysics registered a 7% increase in its Impact Factor, reaching 5.8, affirming its position as a leading publication in its field.

EDP Sciences attributed these gains to sustained contributions from authors, reviewers, and editorial teams. While acknowledging the significance of citation metrics, the publisher emphasized the limitations of such indicators. These include variations in disciplinary citation practices, delayed recognition of scientific influence, and the focus on short-term visibility over long-term scholarly value.

The publisher affirmed the need for broader and more responsible approaches to research evaluation. Emphasis was placed on long-term scientific impact, societal relevance, knowledge dissemination, and collaborative culture. The results were positioned within a wider commitment to open, rigorous, and meaningful publishing practices that serve both the academic community and broader public interests.
