Academic publisher Emerald has become the first publisher to partner with the open research service provider F1000, starting Emerald's own open research publishing platform - Emerald Open Research - using the technology, infrastructure and editorial services provided by F1000.
The publishing partnership with F1000 is a natural extension of the Emerald Reach open access programme launched in September 2017, which is designed to deliver rigorous high-quality open access content, support authors and extend their impact.
With this move, Emerald seeks to help researchers make real impact through an open research model, giving authors greater choice, reach and flexibility. Research - which can take the form of a standard research article, case studies or open data notes, and more - will be published rapidly once submitted to Emerald Open Research, which will be operated by F1000.
The platform will use a model of immediate publication followed by transparent invited peer review, complete with full article versioning. Authors are in control of the review process, allowing them to select expert peer reviewers, to respond to comments or questions about their research, and publish revised versions of their articles when and how they wish.
The transparent peer review process is designed to encourage constructive feedback from experts focussed on helping the authors improve their work, rather than on making an editorial decision to accept or reject an article.
Emerald Open Research will be based on interdisciplinary research themes that address crucial real world topics aligned to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. Initial themes will include Sustainable Food Systems, Healthy Lives, Responsible Management, Sustainable Cities, 21st Century Education and the Digital World.
Emerald has been expanding its portfolio of open access content, and now publishes more than 30 fully open access journals, including the recently flipped International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management (IJCCSM). Emerald also offers a range of open access options to book authors and their sponsoring bodies across all formats - monographs, handbooks, short form and professional content.
Emerald Open Research will start accepting submissions at the end of 2018.
