The Public Knowledge Project (PKP), an SFU Core Facility, has announced its flagship software, Open Journal Systems (OJS), has been chosen to underpin the European Commission’s Open Research Europe (ORE), an open access publishing platform.
The €890K award comes after the European Commission (EC) released a platform analysis highlighting the importance of technological autonomy in achieving ORE’s long-term vision. The same analysis noted OJS as an advantaged platform due to its high penetration and success in the open access publishing community. In December 2023, the EC launched a call for tenders to find an existing open source software on which a new ORE platform would be based.
In fulfillment of this two-year contract, PKP will deliver a fully functional, production grade open-source publishing platform that uses OJS to fulfill the entire ORE publishing workflow. The new ORE platform will be made available in its entirety for further development with the open source community and for free reuse by anyone interested under an open source license.
The migration of ORE to OJS promotes collaborative and sustainable publishing processes, with a particular interest in creating an accessible and globally maintained solution. Enhancements made to OJS will be available in future software releases for the benefit of all users.
With more than 44,000 journals using OJS worldwide, this contract will have a significant impact on the scholarly publishing community at large, moving PKP one step closer to achieving its long-term vision: a world where access and contribution to knowledge are open for the benefit of all.
