Ex Libris, a leader in library technology solutions, has launched an artificial intelligence-driven system to revolutionize metadata management in the Alma Community Zone. This innovative initiative addresses the long-standing challenge of incomplete bibliographic records by leveraging AI to analyze full-text content and automatically populate missing MARC fields.
Since its implementation in February 2024, the AI-powered system has processed approximately 8,000 records weekly, starting with Ebook Central titles. The initiative has focused on non-fiction books, which have shown particularly high compatibility with AI analysis, delivering enriched metadata that improves resource discoverability for library users.
The system operates within a robust quality assurance framework that combines internal librarian reviews with community feedback. Ex Libris has also developed a comprehensive monitoring system to refine AI prompts and post-processing protocols continually, ensuring the enriched records meet the highest standards of accuracy and relevance.
Guided by customer usage data and full-text availability, the development roadmap prioritizes adapting the AI system to diverse content types. Community feedback remains a cornerstone of this initiative, shaping improvements to better align with the evolving needs of libraries and their patrons.
The integration of AI into bibliographic record enrichment marks a significant milestone in library services, enabling more efficient metadata management and improved access to resources. Libraries already benefiting from these AI-enriched records are encouraged to share their experiences, helping to refine and enhance the system for broader adoption.
This initiative highlights Ex Libris’ commitment to combining cutting-edge technology with collaborative efforts to meet the dynamic demands of modern libraries, ensuring resources are more accessible and discoverable for users worldwide.
