F1000, a part of the Taylor & Francis group, has secured a second contract to continue providing technology, editorial, and communication services for Open Research Europe (ORE), the European Commission's prominent open research publishing platform. This achievement solidifies F1000's pivotal role in advancing the European Commission's mission to promote a new era of open research characterized by quality, integrity, collaboration, and transparency.
In 2020, F1000 was initially awarded a four-year contract to establish and manage ORE, a publishing venue designed for research funded through the Horizon program and other eligible European Commission research initiatives, spanning a wide range of subject areas. The platform was conceived as a response to transform traditional publishing models and prioritize open access and transparent research practices.
The new contract will extend F1000's involvement, enabling the company to continue providing technology, editorial services, and communication support for ORE. Furthermore, it marks the expansion of the platform to encompass all European Commission framework programs, allowing them to publish their research on ORE. Notably, ORE will begin the journey towards supporting multilingual publications and enhancing interoperability with OpenAIRE.
Since its official launch in March 2021, ORE has witnessed remarkable growth, attracting over 1,800 authors from 340 institutions across 45 countries. These authors have contributed over 450 articles covering a diverse range of research topics, from artificial intelligence applications to predict battery degradation to the tool usage of chimpanzees.
ORE has played a pivotal role in reshaping research communication by offering a variety of article types that enable authors to share research outputs at different stages of their journey. While traditional Research Articles make up 50% of the content, the remaining 50% includes non-traditional article types like Method Articles, Essays, and Software Tool Articles, reducing research waste and capturing the full spectrum of research contributions.
Furthermore, ORE is actively contributing to the shift away from journal-based metrics, such as Impact Factor, by emphasizing article-level metrics such as views, citations, and downloads as a measure of research impact. The platform fully aligns with the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) principles. Several ORE articles have gained recognition in news outlets and policy documents, amplifying their impact beyond traditional academic boundaries.
In an impressive feat, ORE has achieved indexation in 10 major databases within just two years. Most recently, it secured indexation in PubMed Central, adding to its previous successes with Scopus, ERIH PLUS, Inspec, and earning the DOAJ seal within its first year of operation. These achievements underscore ORE's position as a significant player in the open research landscape, fostering transparent and accessible research dissemination.
The renewed contract between F1000 and the European Commission reaffirms their commitment to fostering open research practices and advancing the global scientific community's knowledge sharing. As ORE continues to grow and evolve, it promises to remain at the forefront of open research initiatives worldwide.
