FIZ Karlsruhe’s ICSD data powers global AI materials initiative -

The Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) from FIZ Karlsruhe has been selected as one of the scientific data sources for CuspAI’s new AI Materials Foundry. The international network includes more than 45 partners from academia and industry, among them NVIDIA, Meta, Samsung, Henkel, and Hyundai Motor Group. The initiative aims to accelerate the development of new materials through artificial intelligence.

High‑quality, reliable, and curated data are essential for AI‑driven materials research. ICSD provides one of the key sources of experimental data that CuspAI’s models use to design and evaluate new materials. By supplying this data, FIZ Karlsruhe helps ensure that scientific findings can be incorporated more quickly into applications for semiconductors, energy technologies, and industrial manufacturing.

The selection of ICSD underscores its global significance. For decades, it has been recognized as a reference database for inorganic crystal structures, meeting the highest scientific quality standards. Its carefully verified and curated data provide the foundation required for modern AI applications in materials research.

Through participation in the AI Materials Foundry, FIZ Karlsruhe is reinforcing its role as an internationally recognized provider of high‑quality research data. The organization emphasized that quality‑assured scientific information infrastructures are critical for advancing AI‑supported research.
