Fondazione LIA has welcomed three prominent organizations: EDItEUR, the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM), and the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), to its network, strengthening its international presence and reinforcing its commitment to accessible publishing and technological innovation and inclusion.
Established in 2014 by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE) and the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired (UICI), LIA has consistently collaborated with institutions and partners to launch socially impactful, technology-driven initiatives. The latest expansion reflects its aim to cultivate global alliances and exchange best practices across the publishing value chain.
EDItEUR is an international not-for-profit organization that spearheads the development of electronic commerce standards for the book, ebook, and audiobook industries. This includes the ONIX standard, the most widely used system for distributing metadata across the book supply chain, and Thema, a multilingual subject classification scheme. EDItEUR represents more than 110 members across 25 countries. Its long-standing collaboration with LIA now gains a formal footing through mutual membership.
The STM Association is the premier global trade association for academic and professional publishers. Representing around 150 members—including independent and large publishers, scholarly societies, and technology innovation companies—it accounts for over 60% of the world's scholarly output in English.
BISG is an international organization bringing together publishers, editorial and production suppliers, wholesalers, distributors, libraries, retailers, and other key partners. It develops and refines standards and conducts research in essential fields like metadata, rights management, production and distribution, and subject management. BISG's network extends to over 200 organizations and 2,800 publishing professionals and experts in 25 countries.
These groups’ participation aligns with LIA’s strategy of positioning itself as a global reference point in accessible publishing through cooperation and shared innovation.
