Forschungszentrum Jülich selects Scopus Custom Data to measure global reference values -

STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced that Forschungszentrum Jülich has selected Scopus Custom Data (SCD), the primary source of Scopus.com, to calculate global reference values at subject and country levels. Forschungszentrum Jülich is one of the largest research centers in Europe.

Scopus Custom Data provides research agencies, institutions and government bodies with customised datasets in XML format for large-scale research performance analysis. The XML data can then be loaded by customers into their proprietary in-house systems, making it possible for them to run their specific search queries and execute their own analytical techniques; providing the analyst with the freedom to formulate their own reports.

Forschungszentrum Jülich is a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organisation in terms of staff and budget. It claims to be the only research institute of its kind within the Helmholtz Association that conducts bibliometric analysis and works with raw data - a primary reason for the partnership between Elsevier and Jülich. The research center found that the breadth of content in Scopus allowed for more German and international literature from a single data source to be captured, thereby providing the broadest content coverage. Scopus currently covers 1,326 active German titles.

The use of SCD for this type of measurement is seen to be increasingly becoming the standard among different institutions. Jülich is one of many similar institutions around the world that are now using Scopus data as an authoritative data source for research performance measurement. In February 2009, the Australian Research Council (ARC) selected SCD for its Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative. The ERA initiative seeks to assess research quality within Australia's higher education institutions using a combination of indicators and expert review by committees comprised of experienced, internationally-recognised experts.
