Frontiers, a leading scientific publisher, is leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to promote trust and accessibility in scientific research. Mirjam Eckert, the chief publishing officer at Frontiers, recently introduced the publisher and shed light on its machine learning tool in a talk supported by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute.
The concept of human compatible AI has the potential to empower individuals and society as a whole. However, building public trust in AI and ensuring the integrity of scientific knowledge are crucial. Frontiers aims to address these concerns by utilizing AI in its publishing process. The publisher's Artificial Intelligence Review Assistant (AIRA) plays a vital role in verifying the accuracy and honesty of scientific knowledge even before the research paper undergoes peer review.
AIRA meticulously evaluates every research manuscript submitted to Frontiers, conducting up to 20 checks per second. These checks encompass various aspects such as language quality, the integrity of figures and images, plagiarism, and conflicts of interest. By providing editors and reviewers with an additional perspective, AIRA assists them in making informed decisions about the suitability of a research paper for rigorous and transparent peer review.
In the face of global existential threats like health emergencies and climate change, effective management and mitigation require political will, global collaboration, and scientific breakthroughs on an unprecedented scale. The key to success lies in the widespread dissemination of the latest scientific knowledge. To achieve this, it is essential to publish high-quality research at a large scale and enable machine readability across vast volumes of information. These efforts can significantly accelerate scientific discovery and enhance our chances of overcoming the challenges we face.
Frontiers remains committed to advancing science for the benefit of all. By leveraging compatible AI tools like AIRA, the publisher aims to foster trust, facilitate access to scientific knowledge, and drive scientific progress. With the integration of AI and human expertise, Frontiers envisions a future where reliable and impactful research is widely available, fueling global collaboration and innovation.
