Geological Society of America acquires Mountain Press Publishing’s popular Geology series -

In a strategic acquisition aimed at broadening public engagement with geoscience, the Geological Society of America (GSA) has acquired Mountain Press Publishing Company’s celebrated series, including Roadside Geology, Geology Underfoot, and Geology Rocks!. Along with these award-winning titles, GSA will also take over select publications from Mountain Press’s Earth Science and Young Readers series, with all distribution continuing through Mountain Press’s facility in Missoula, Montana.

This acquisition represents a significant expansion of GSA’s efforts to make geology more accessible, appealing to both seasoned geologists and general audiences. By incorporating these popular titles, GSA aims to make scientific insights on geology part of the public conversation, from cross-country travelers to science enthusiasts exploring the wonders of Earth’s landscapes. The Roadside Geology series, for example, brings geological knowledge to readers through a travel-friendly format, turning ordinary road trips into educational adventures that highlight geology’s relevance to everyday life.

Mountain Press’s well-known series, long praised for making complex geological concepts understandable and engaging, aligns seamlessly with GSA’s mission to advance geoscience. With titles like Geology Underfoot, readers can explore geological marvels in their own backyards, while Geology Rocks! offers an engaging entry point for beginners. Together, these series provide approachable resources that enrich public understanding of Earth’s geoheritage, supporting GSA’s commitment to accessible science communication.

GSA’s acquisition will not only maintain these series but also support a shared vision for growth. More than 60% of Mountain Press authors have previously published in GSA journals, creating a collaborative foundation that promises to draw in both familiar and new voices in the field. This partnership merges GSA’s scientific expertise with Mountain Press’s outreach-oriented approach, reinforcing both organizations’ contributions to the field of geoscience.

By preserving and expanding on Mountain Press’s legacy, GSA underscores its dedication to fostering widespread appreciation of geology and advancing scientific knowledge. This acquisition is a key milestone for GSA’s public-facing science efforts, ensuring that its contributions to the geoscience community continue to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding across all audiences.
