In a landmark collaboration, the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) has partnered with 26 organizations representing diverse creative professionals worldwide, including academic publishers, news agencies, entertainment companies, and book publishers, to unveil the pioneering Global Principles for Artificial Intelligence (AI). These principles offer a first-of-their-kind framework to guide the development, deployment, and regulation of AI systems and applications. The aim is to create an ethical and accountable environment that fosters innovation and ensures business opportunities while safeguarding the interests of content creators, publishers, and consumers alike.
These Global Principles for AI address essential dimensions such as intellectual property, transparency, accountability, quality and integrity, fairness, safety, design, and sustainable development. By doing so, they set a comprehensive standard that ensures the responsible development and deployment of AI systems.
Key provisions of the Global AI Principles include: Respect for Intellectual Property Rights: Developers must adhere to established principles and laws that protect publishers' intellectual property, brands, consumer relationships, and investments. The Principles firmly state that AI systems' "indiscriminate misappropriation of our intellectual property is unethical, harmful, and an infringement of our protected rights."; Efficient Licensing Models: Developers are encouraged to use licensing models that facilitate innovation while respecting publishers' intellectual property rights; Granular Transparency: Developers must provide detailed transparency, allowing publishers to enforce their rights when their content is included in AI training datasets; Clear Attribution: Content should be attributed clearly to its original publishers; Compliance with Competition Laws: AI models must not be employed for anti-competitive purposes, and developers should adhere to competition laws and principles; Promotion of Trust and Reliability: AI-generated content should be accurate, correct, and complete, and the privacy of users interacting with AI systems must be respected; and Alignment with Human Values: AI systems should operate in accordance with global laws and human values.
These comprehensive principles offer a robust foundation for the responsible development and use of AI systems and applications within the publishing and creative industries. They prioritize the protection of intellectual property, transparency, and accountability, aiming to ensure that AI technology enhances content creation and dissemination while upholding ethical standards.
