Global Reporting Standard for AI disclosure in research consultation opens -

The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) has released the report ‘Recommendations for a Classification of AI Use in Academic Manuscript Preparation’ in September 2025 to address differences in how Artificial Intelligence use is disclosed.

Transparency regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in research articles and other scholarly outputs is described as an aspect of research integrity.

Current practices for disclosing AI use vary across academic disciplines, geographic regions, and publication cultures.

A follow-up activity has been announced to approach disclosure from a broader collaborative perspective involving multiple participants in the academic enterprise.

STM is participating in a joint harmonization initiative to work toward a ‘Global Reporting Standard for AI Disclosure in Research’ together with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Science Council (ISC), and the Global Young Academy (GYA).

This initiative will serve as a focus track at the World Conference on Research Integrity scheduled to take place from May 3 through May 6, 2026, in Vancouver.

To ensure the reporting guideline reflects a wide range of perspectives, STM and its partner organizations are conducting three consultation rounds, with the first round open through February 28, 2026, to map needs for AI disclosure and identify a preferred reporting format.

Members of STM and the broader community are invited to participate in the first consultation round to help align the format of the reporting standard with current publishing industry experience and expectations.
