Technical professional organization IEEE and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) have announced that their portfolio of over 100 AI-related standards is now included in the newly launched International AI Standards Exchange. The Exchange, inspired by the United Nations AI Advisory Body’s 2024 report on governance, serves as a centralized repository for discovering international AI standards and fostering collaborative, responsible AI development.
As one of the largest global standards bodies, IEEE played a foundational role in creating the Exchange. Its contributions were recognized in the 2024 United Nations AI Advisory Body’s report “Governing AI for Humanity,” leading to IEEE’s inclusion as a key partner.
IEEE SA’s contributions span multiple initiatives addressing ethical and societal challenges in AI:
• IEEE 7000™ series: Addresses ethical and societal considerations in AI and autonomous systems, including transparency, privacy, algorithmic bias, and accountability.
• Ethically Aligned Design (EAD) Framework: Informed AI principles developed by organizations such as the OECD and reflected in the UN Global Digital Compact; contributes to ongoing discussions on ethics and human rights in AI.
• IEEE CertifAIEd™ program: Evaluates AI systems based on criteria such as transparency, privacy, accountability, and bias mitigation. Designed to align with evolving regulatory frameworks in jurisdictions including the EU, US, China, Canada, and the UK.
• Technology Policy Collaborative (TPC): Facilitates engagement among policymakers and stakeholders to develop governance approaches that address the impact of emerging technologies.
IEEE SA’s ongoing contributions to global AI governance are supported by assessments, certifications, and training initiatives recognized by government agencies and NGOs. These activities contribute to ongoing efforts in international AI standardization and implementation.
