IEEE Xplore adds AI Research assistant for scientific literature searches -

IEEE has introduced the IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite™, an artificial intelligence tool designed to help researchers search and analyze scientific literature in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The system uses the full text of millions of peer-reviewed publications to generate summaries and provide links to source documents for verification.

The IEEE Xplore Digital Library provides access to IEEE standards, journals, magazines, conference proceedings, and other technical publications. The AI Research Suite is available as an optional subscription upgrade for institutional subscribers to the library.

Powered by an AI system developed for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) literature, the suite supports natural-language searches and conversational research workflows. It is designed to help users discover relevant publications, understand complex technical papers, and identify connections across research findings.

The IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite was developed in collaboration with scientific and library communities worldwide. During development, IEEE conducted research into user needs and the limitations of existing AI research assistants. More than 3,000 testers, including engineers, scientists, and library information professionals, provided feedback to help refine the system and its research workflows.

The tool supports semantic search, allowing users to enter natural-language questions or paste longer passages of text to find related research. It also generates summaries of search results and provides contextual definitions of technical terms to help users understand unfamiliar concepts.

According to IEEE, the suite uses both the full text and metadata of its peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers to improve the relevance of search results. Its curated STEM metadata is intended to help users locate scholarly content across technical disciplines. AI-generated summaries include links to source documents, enabling users to check the underlying evidence and cross-reference findings.

IEEE has also designed the system to reduce the risk of AI hallucinations. Its retrieval process is restricted to IEEE's collection of peer-reviewed full-text publications and a curated dataset of STEM metadata. When the system cannot identify relevant scientific information within this collection, it is designed to inform users rather than generate unsupported answers.

Further information about the suite's features, content coverage, and demonstrations for organizations is available on the IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite™ website.
