IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, has announced that 12 of its newly launched fully open access journals, introduced in 2020, have been indexed by Clarivate and received their first Journal Impact Factors (JIF) in the 2022 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) released in late June 2023.
The JCR study, a renowned annual assessment of scholarly research's influence and impact, provides an objective means for evaluating the world's leading journals. Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is one of the key measurements utilized by authors to assess the quality, impact, and credibility of publications, aiding them in making informed decisions about where to publish their research. By analyzing articles' cited references, JIF, along with other metrics such as Article Influence Score, Eigenfactor, or Scopus CiteScore, helps researchers avoid predatory journals and navigate the diverse publishing landscape. IEEE's established journals have consistently ranked high in citation rankings across various technology fields.
In 2020, recognizing the evolving needs of authors and to provide more open access options to disseminate research widely and comply with funder mandates, IEEE introduced a series of fully open
access journals spanning various technological domains, including biomedical engineering, computing, nanotechnology, power electronics, telecommunications, vehicular technology, and more. The organization has since continued to rapidly expand this portfolio, now offering over 30 fully open access journals alongside its 170 hybrid open access journals.
According to Clarivate, the Web of Science Core Collection™ follows a meticulous selection process led by expert in-house editors, employing 24 quality criteria to evaluate editorial rigor and best practices at the journal level. Only a select few journals, less than 20% of those submitted, successfully meet these stringent criteria and enter the Clarivate Emerging Sources Citation Index™ (ESCI). The aforementioned IEEE journals earned this distinction within just a few years of their launch and were indexed in the Web of Science.
