IOP Publishing (IOPP) and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) are strengthening their partnership by moving the journal Medical Engineering and Physics (MEP) to IOPP's platform and launching Medical Sensors and Imaging (MSI), a new gold open access (OA) journal for IPEM.
With a partnership spanning over five decades, initiated by the 1972 launch of Physics in Medicine & Biology (PMB), IOP Publishing (IOPP) is now unifying all four IPEM journals under its publishing portfolio. IOPP will offer high-quality publishing services, global dissemination, and strategic insight to enhance the reach and impact of IPEM's journals, aligning with IPEM's mission to advance health through physics and engineering in medicine.
Medical Sensors and Imaging (MSI) and Medical Engineering and Physics (MEP) will adopt the same rigorous publication workflows as IPEM's existing IOPP journals, Physics in Medicine & Biology (PMB) and Physiological Measurement (PMEA). This ensures a consistent, high-quality publishing experience for authors across the entire IPEM journal portfolio. With each journal guided by a dedicated Editor-in-Chief, this cohesive collection expertly supports the global scientific community in physics, engineering, and medicine.
All IPEM publications will follow the same article submission and tracking system, ensuring rapid publication times, constructive peer review, and high standards of integrity. In addition, authors will benefit from initiatives such as double-anonymous peer review, co-review opportunities, and structured reviewer feedback – each designed to promote fairness, transparency, and integrity throughout the review process.
The expansion also brings IOPP’s biomedical physics and engineering portfolio to 14 dedicated journals. Between 2015 and 2024, this portfolio saw a 54% increase in annual article output and a 626% rise in downloads.
The portfolio covers topics such as quantum technologies, machine learning, medical imaging, biomedical sensors, healthcare technologies, personalized medicine, and core areas such as medical device development, biomechanics, and biomaterials.
