IOP Publishing (IOPP) is spotlighting the impact of North American research by introducing its 'top-cited paper awards.' In a first-of-its-kind move, the awards honor corresponding authors from North America who rank in the top one percent of the most-cited articles published within IOPP's portfolio of journals over the past three years.
Approximately 130 articles authored by North Americans amassed over 15,400 citations collectively, showcasing the region's substantial contributions to scientific literature. The most cited paper, exploring Astronomy and Astrophysics, received a remarkable 795 citations.
This year, the scope of the awards expanded to include North American authors contributing to papers in four rapidly growing subject areas within the physical sciences. Over the last five years, citations for Machine Learning papers surged by 44%, Energy Materials papers saw a 23% increase, Nano Science witnessed a 10% rise, and Quantum papers experienced a 12.1% uptick in citations. These emerging fields collectively constitute 9.5% of the selected top-cited papers, underscoring the growing interest in these scientific disciplines.
IOPP's Top Cited Paper Awards, previously granted to Chinese and Indian researchers since 2017, acknowledge the global scientific community's appreciation for their impactful contributions to Physics.
