Jisc pilots TeacherMatic: AI lightens workload for further education teachers -

Jisc, the UK's digital solutions provider for education and research, is taking a step forward in assisting further education (FE) colleges by exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce workload for staff. With the launch of TeacherMatic, an AI-based tool designed to streamline teachers' tasks, Jisc aims to empower educators to prioritize education over administrative burdens.

Supported by Jisc's national centre for AI in tertiary education, eight colleges will participate in a pilot program to test the effectiveness of TeacherMatic. This innovative tool utilizes AI to automate routine tasks such as lesson planning and resource creation, giving teachers more time to focus on teaching and improving their classroom effectiveness.

TeacherMatic employs generative AI to create high-quality classroom resources in a fraction of the time it would traditionally take. By inputting the desired topic, teachers can generate various materials, including lesson plans, schemes of work, grading criteria for assessments, and multiple-choice quizzes for assessing learning. The user-friendly tool also allows customization to meet individual learner needs.

During the 12-month pilot, staff members will be given dedicated time and training to experiment with AI. The initial stage will involve Jisc and the participating colleges working closely with TeacherMatic to identify the areas where the tool provides the most value. Subsequently, participants will directly use TeacherMatic, providing feedback to Jisc, which will assess the benefits. Upon completion, a comprehensive report will be published to share the findings and enable other institutions to learn about the effectiveness of integrating AI for resource creation.

By embracing AI technology like TeacherMatic, Jisc aims to equip FE teachers with innovative tools that can revolutionize their workflows and create a more efficient and rewarding teaching experience.
