JMIRx journals have joined the Publish, Review, Curate (PRC) Alliance as a founding member, contributing their experience with preprints, peer review, and the publication of reviewed research to efforts to develop more open and interoperable scholarly communication systems.
JMIRx has operated as an overlay journal series since 2019, using a publishing model that builds on preprints and incorporates peer review and the curation and publication of reviewed research. Its participation in the PRC Alliance will involve collaboration with journals, publishers, preprint servers, repositories, and peer-review services to address shared challenges and develop common practices and infrastructure.
The PRC Alliance promotes principles including openness, equity, interoperability, and stakeholder governance. Its approach separates publishing, reviewing, and curating into distinct but connected stages, allowing research outputs and their associated assessments to be shared across services and platforms.
For researchers, this model can enable earlier public access to research findings, greater transparency in evaluation, and improved recognition of peer-review contributions. Making review reports and author responses publicly available can provide readers with additional context about how research has been assessed. JMIRx already publishes peer-review reports and author responses alongside its articles.
The model also aims to improve interoperability among scholarly publishing services, allowing research outputs and associated reviews to move more easily between systems. By connecting articles, reviews, author responses, and other research outputs, the approach seeks to provide a more comprehensive record of how research is developed and evaluated.
The PRC Alliance is a joint initiative of the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) and ASAPbio. During its first year of operation, the Alliance will be hosted by COAR as part of the COAR Notify Project.
