Journal of Participatory Medicine announces new theme issue on patient and consumer use of artificial intelligence for health -

JMIR Publications has announced a call for submissions for a new theme issue titled “Patient and Consumer Use of Artificial Intelligence for Health” in its premier open-access journal, the Journal of Participatory Medicine. This journal, indexed in PubMed, SCOPUS, Sherpa Romeo, and DOAJ, invites researchers, practitioners, and patient advocates to contribute to this important discourse.

The upcoming theme issue aims to explore the use of artificial intelligence in health (AIH) from the perspectives of patients and the public. The journal seeks papers that examine both the experiences and impacts of patients and health consumers using AI applications, as well as the involvement of patients, caregivers, and the public in the co-design and development of AIH.

The journal welcomes a variety of submission types, including original research, reviews, case studies, and viewpoints. Key topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Experience and Impact of AI Tools:

• How patients use generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) to learn about health issues, understand health data, and engage in self-care and behavior change.

• Patient perspectives on AI chatbots, virtual assistants, and other tools for answering queries, assessing symptoms, and communicating with health professionals.

• The use of AI-powered devices and applications by patients to collect and analyze data, and the resulting impact on behavior and health outcomes.

Co-production and Co-design of AI Tools:

• Involvement of patients and caregivers with lived experience in the design, development, or deployment of AI applications for specific health issues.

• Patient and caregiver participation in the research of health-related AI applications.

• Public deliberation on key issues related to health AI, such as privacy, security, ethics, data bias, governance, and responsible use of personal health data.

Clinical Use of AI Tools:

• Patient perspectives on clinician-derived AI tools directed at patients and caregivers, including AI-derived content sent in response to secure patient emails.

The journal is particularly interested in articles co-authored with patient advocates, emphasizing the collaborative nature of this research. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, ensuring the highest quality and relevance of published articles.

Accepted articles will be featured in a theme issue (e-collection) titled “Patient and Consumer Use of Artificial Intelligence for Health,” highlighting cutting-edge research and innovative approaches in this evolving field.
