JSTOR expands access to AI-powered research tool, enhancing academic exploration -

JSTOR, a non-profit service of ITHAKA, has announced the expansion of its beta program for an interactive research tool powered by artificial intelligence (AI), now available to 500 higher education institutions. This initiative aims to empower researchers and educators, particularly in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, by enhancing research practices and skill development while maintaining essential critical thinking and information literacy.

Initially launched in August 2023, JSTOR's interactive research tool has already garnered significant interest, with over 35,000 active users from more than 6,300 institutions across 158 countries. The tool allows users to assess content relevance through summaries, engage in conversational inquiries about selected journal articles or research reports, and discover related works, making it especially beneficial for students tackling complex academic texts.

The feedback from early testers has been overwhelmingly positive, with both novice and experienced researchers noting that the tool not only deepens their understanding but also saves time and fosters interdisciplinary exploration.

JSTOR is also actively collaborating with publishers to ensure that the tool aligns with their goals while addressing critical issues related to source integrity. Publishers have expressed support for the interactive research tool, recognizing its potential to enhance reader engagement and usage of published scholarship.

Looking ahead, JSTOR plans to make the interactive research tool available to all of its 14,000 participating institutions in 2025, continuing to incorporate feedback from users and stakeholders to refine the tool. Higher education institutions are currently being invited via email to sign up for early access, and publishers interested in exploring the tool are encouraged to reach out to JSTOR for more information.
