Lancaster University Library has joined the Open Institutional Publishing Association (OIPA), a community of practice dedicated to supporting non-commercial open access publishing in the UK. Established in autumn 2023, OIPA brings together university presses and library-based publishing initiatives, providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and best practices in open access publishing.
In January 2025, the Library launched Lancaster University Open Journals, a platform designed to support open access publishing by providing free hosting and workflow management for academic journals. Built on Open Journal Systems (OJS), an open-source platform developed by the Public Knowledge Project, the service enables journal editors to manage submissions, peer reviews, and publications without incurring costly subscription fees. The platform also ensures long-term preservation and global indexing of published research.
By joining OIPA, Lancaster University Library strengthens its commitment to open access and the development of an open research culture through institutional collaboration.
