MDPI joins United2Act in global effort to combat paper mills -

MDPI, a leading academic publisher, has announced its participation in the United2Act initiative, a collaborative endeavor aimed at addressing the pervasive issue of paper mills in academic publishing. United2Act brings together stakeholders from across the publishing industry to collectively tackle the challenge posed by fraudulent entities seeking to undermine research integrity.

Paper mills, fraudulent entities that engage in manipulative practices such as falsifying data, fabricating research, and manipulating peer review, pose a significant threat to the integrity of the scholarly record. Their activities not only erode trust in academic publishing but also compromise the reliability of scientific research.

MDPI has been at the forefront of efforts to combat the proliferation of paper mills. Through the implementation of rigorous editorial processes and the use of sophisticated detection tools, MDPI editors are actively working to identify and address potential ethical breaches within manuscripts.

The United2Act initiative emerged from a virtual summit held in May 2023, where representatives from research bodies, publishers, universities, and other key stakeholders convened to address the issue of paper mills. The summit resulted in a consensus statement outlining five key areas of action, including education and awareness, improved post-publication corrections, facilitation of research on paper mills, development of trust markers, and fostering dialogue between stakeholders.

As part of its commitment to promoting transparency and integrity in scholarly publishing, MDPI is dedicated to actively supporting the objectives outlined by United2Act. By collaborating with the scientific community and implementing measures to combat paper mills, MDPI aims to uphold the highest standards of research integrity and ensure the credibility of scholarly publications.

Through collective action and ongoing collaboration, MDPI and its partners within the United2Act initiative are working towards a future where research integrity is safeguarded, and the scholarly record remains a trusted source of knowledge for the global academic community.
