MDPI strengthens journal portfolio in 2025 Journal Citation Reports with expanded rankings and impact -

Open access publisher MDPI has reported strong performance in the 2025 edition of Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR). With 298 journals indexed, 193 ranked in the top half of their categories. 61 journals received top-quartile placement, and six were ranked in the top 10% of their fields.

The report shows that 60 MDPI journals received a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for the first time, while 116 titles saw an increase in their JIFs. Fourteen journals achieved an Impact Factor of 5.0 or higher, highlighting their influence and discoverability. MDPI’s cumulative citation count in Web of Science reached 18.4 million at the end of 2024, making it the most cited OA publisher to date.

The performance reflects MDPI’s ongoing investments in editorial quality and indexing coverage. Since the launch of the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) in 2016, the number of MDPI journals included has grown from 24 to over 200. In the 2025 JCR, 103 MDPI journals in the ESCI were ranked in the first or second quartiles.

MDPI has emphasized that while the JIF remains a useful metric, it should be considered alongside other indicators, such as article-level citations and relevance to policy and community impact.

The publisher continues to expand its presence across scientific disciplines through a portfolio of over 455 journals and remains focused on making research accessible to global audiences. The latest rankings reinforce MDPI’s commitment to scholarly excellence and signal growing trust in open access models across the academic publishing landscape.
