MarkLogic Corporation, an operational and transactional Enterprise NoSQL database provider, has announced that the MarkLogic® database has been chosen by OECD to develop OECD.Kappa, its new publications content management and dissemination hub that can quickly and easily aggregate disparate information from various sources and distribute targeted information to its rapidly-growing and changing user base. Using the MarkLogic database, OECD has developed an agile, cost-effective information delivery platform and completed its first project—integrating 4,700 summaries of books in 30 languages—in just under six months, while laying the foundation for ongoing innovation and rapid data ingestion of further content including 22,000 books.
OECD publishes around 250 new titles a year including annual reports, books series and is the world's largest publisher of socio-economic statistical data. In support of the Organisation's mission, OECD Publishing disseminates OECD's knowledge in a coherent, consistent and accessible manner to a growing, global, digital audience. OECD Publishing's legacy database of publications has been a relational database for many years but lacked the flexibility required to aggregate and disseminate information in a timely and affordable manner; additionally, this relational database lacked search functionality and it was not viable to create an add-on search function.
By building OECD.Kappa using the MarkLogic database, OECD Publishing can store all content in a standardized way that makes it easy to access, publish and reuse. Productivity at OECD increased when it went live with the first 4,700 summaries. Previously, content managers had to load summaries one by one into the publications database, but now they can upload summaries with as many as 30 different language versions in just three clicks, dramatically reducing input time. The OECD.Kappa data hub already stores the content from 22,000 books, adding 500 new titles at a highly granular level down to and including individual charts and graphs. OECD.Kappa will also store OECD's working papers, journal articles and thousands of statistical tables and indicators drawn from OECD's 400 statistical databases, creating a single content hub for all its knowledge ready for dissemination via multiple online channels.
OECD.Kappa supports the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) industry standard to organise information in a hierarchical style. OECD.Kappa also contains information about the dissemination channels (the "spokes") on which OECD publishes its content: OECD iLibrary, OECD's Online Bookshop, data.oecd.org, the institutional website OECD.org, third-party sites such as Google Play, Scribd and RePEc as well as discovery services like Summon and Ex Libris.
