Open Library of Humanities publishes new policy on responsible use of generative AI -

The Open Library of Humanities (OLH) has released a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy following an extended consultation process with editorial teams across the platform’s journals. The policy establishes guidance on the responsible and transparent use of generative AI in academic research and scholarly publishing.

The policy outlines OLH’s position that the use of generative AI must be disclosed when it forms a substantial and identifiable part of the research process in submitted articles. The framework is intended to uphold research integrity while recognizing the increasing presence of AI-assisted tools in academic workflows.

The development process involved more than a year of consultation, research, and iterative drafting with journal editors. The resulting policy addresses both the opportunities and risks associated with generative AI, acknowledging its potential to support aspects of academic research while highlighting concerns related to misuse, ethics, and integrity in scholarly communications.

OLH has positioned the policy as humanities-focused and community-informed, responding to limited legal and regulatory guidance currently available in this area. The guidance is designed for authors, editors, and reviewers involved in open access academic publishing and emphasizes transparency and accountability in AI usage.

The policy also reflects OLH’s awareness of the role generative AI may play in improving equity and accessibility in scholarly publishing, including support for researchers with disabilities. At the same time, it stresses the need for caution and ongoing oversight as technologies continue to evolve.

OLH has indicated that the policy will be monitored and updated over time, functioning as a living document that adapts to changes in generative AI adoption and use. A detailed report documenting the editorial consultation process and revisions made during policy development has been published alongside the final policy.
