Pearson and AWS report highlights AI readiness gap in UK -

A new report from Pearson and Amazon Web Services (AWS) examines the gap between artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge and its practical application in the United Kingdom. The findings suggest that while higher education continues to play a central role in preparing students, graduates often lack opportunities to apply AI skills in ways that align with workplace expectations.

The study revealed that only 14% of UK learners consider themselves highly AI‑ready, meaning they combine AI knowledge with critical human skills. Employers also identified challenges: 43% reported that graduates struggle to translate AI knowledge into real‑world application, and 47% of learners believed the best preparation for an AI‑enabled career involves both university education and practical work experience.

The report emphasized that bridging this gap requires integrating AI tools into coursework and expanding workplace experiences such as apprenticeships. Employers highlighted the importance of human judgment, communication, collaboration, and adaptability alongside technical skills.

To address these challenges, the report introduced the AI Readiness Friction Framework, outlining areas where progress is slow across the learning‑to‑work continuum. Recommended actions include accelerating curriculum design and review cycles, strengthening employer feedback loops, investing in faculty AI capability, embedding clear governance for AI use, and creating structured opportunities for students to practice AI in workplace contexts. The framework also emphasized the importance of developing compound capabilities such as strategic intelligence, ethical stewardship, and critical human skills.

By combining Pearson’s expertise in learning and workforce skills with AWS’s knowledge of AI deployment and governance, the research provides a shared framework for institutions and employers to define AI readiness more clearly and align education with workplace needs.
