As the use of generative AI surges among students in higher education, learning company Pearson has announced the launch of a new AI-powered tool designed to assist instructors. This innovative tool will be integrated into Pearson’s MyLab and Mastering platforms starting in August, aiming to enhance teaching efficiency and effectiveness.
Pearson’s AI tool for instructors is designed to help educators create personalized assignments efficiently, allowing them to focus more on student learning. Currently, thousands of instructors utilize MyLab and Mastering to design courses, assign homework and assessments, and monitor student progress in real-time. The inclusion of the AI tool is set to enhance these capabilities, offering a more streamlined approach to assignment creation and course management.
A recent survey by Ithaka S&R revealed that many college instructors feel uncertain about incorporating generative AI into their teaching practices. Of the 2,654 instructors surveyed in the US, 38% reported little to no confidence in their ability to use AI effectively. However, 36% indicated that using generative AI for designing syllabi, assignments, and other course materials would be helpful or very helpful. In contrast, Pearson’s research shows that students are increasingly using AI to study more efficiently and achieve better grades.
The Pearson Skills Outlook report supports this, indicating that generative AI could save US educators nearly 3 million hours a week by 2026, freeing up more time for direct student engagement. The instructor AI tools will be available for the Fall 2024 semester in 25 business, math, science, and nursing titles in the US.
Since last year, Pearson has incorporated student-focused generative AI study tools into MyLab and Mastering, as well as their integrated Pearson+ eTextbooks. These tools offer personalized step-by-step guidance, content summarization, and explanations for challenging concepts. Millions of students will have access to these tools this fall semester across 50 titles.
Pearson’s application of generative AI is supported by learning scientists, vetted by subject matter experts, and based on content from Pearson’s extensive library of higher education materials. With over 80% of its products now digital or digitally enabled, Pearson is committed to investing in the responsible application of AI to advance product innovation and enhance the learning experience.
As educators prepare for the upcoming semester, Pearson’s new AI tool promises to be a valuable asset in improving teaching efficiency and fostering a more personalized learning environment for students.
