Academic publisher SAGE Publishing will partner with British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS) to publish Acupuncture in Medicine (AIM), a journal exploring scientific and clinical acupuncture, from January 2019.
AIM focuses on scientific acupuncture research. The journal's policy is to take the Western medical approach by using current knowledge of neurophysiology, anatomy and pathology to interpret the clinical effects of acupuncture. The journal accepts original research submissions on all aspects of acupuncture, but insists that they are described with a modern scientific rationale.
Acupuncture is often viewed somewhat controversially. According to David Carr, Editor of AIM, the journal seeks to address this stigma with its policy that all research is presented and interpreted in strictly neurophysiological terms using only evidence-based frameworks, in order to critically evaluate its applications and integration within healthcare.
