STM publisher Springer has announced an agreement with Japan-based Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP). Under the deal, DNP will provide single-copy minimum print-on-demand (POD) solutions for Springer titles delivered to the Japanese market. DNP will also handle the delivery logistics to local distributors, libraries and other end users in Japan. A possible extension of the agreement to the rest of the Asian market will be discussed in the future.
The agreement will allow DNP to connect to Springer's global electronic publishing workflow, which is seen to be an important step in the direction of achieving fully automated inventory-less POD systems, thereby significantly reducing delivery times, freight and other costs.
DNP will use its facilities and highly developed data management systems, and is expected to start processing Springer titles by the fourth quarter of 2011.
